The Soo Locks
The Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie are a National Historic Landmark and have been operated toll free by the US Army Corps of Engineers since 1881. The locks allow ships to pass to and from Lake Superior and Lake Huron through St. Marys River. More than 11,000 vessels, carrying up to 90 million tons of iron ore, coal, grain, or stone, pass through the locks every year. It was an interesting visit to a border town that seems to have seen better times. If you have more questions about the Soo Locks, you can find answers here.
