Crazy Horse Memorial and Mount Rushmore National Memorial
After leaving Devils Tower, we drove from Wyoming to South Dakota, the ninth state we have visited on this road trip. We made a brief pit stop for lunch at Jewel Cave National Monument, home of the third longest cave system in the world. Our next full stop was Crazy Horse Memorial, the world’s largest mountain carving in progress, started by Korczak Ziolkowski in 1947. The planned carving will be 641 feet long and 563 feet high when finished. Our last full stop was Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Contrary to her earlier threats, Clare did not remain in the car. Doing so would not have been a wise choice with temperatures approaching 95 degrees.
